RESEARCH

How Research is Done

The center utilizes a grounded, in-depth approach to understanding competitiveness in biotechnology. We engage highly trained, interdisciplinary teams who work closely with companies to discuss issues, collect data and develop solutions to industry challenges.

Research teams visit industry executives and speak with individuals working in biotechnology companies to gain a hands-on appreciation for the issues related to specific challenges facing the industry. Based on these observations, the teams conduct primary research by gathering data from industry participants and augment this with secondary data when applicable.

The teams then conduct rigorous analysis of the data and present the results to peer and industry audiences for additional insight and feedback. These insights are incorporated into final publications to build our knowledge of what enhances competitive advantage in biotechnology.

Current Planned Projects

The Center is working on or planning studies that examine the managerial and policy aspects of the following topics:
Managing Uncertainty
Reducing Cycle Time
Reducing Development cost
Patent Licensing

SBIC Research Affiliates

Affiliates of SBIC are drawn from faculty members, research staff, and post-docs working in a wide range of academic disciplines. Participation is encouraged by any scholar who seeks to ground his or her research in a deep knowledge of the biotechnology industry through field research and direct contact with people in the industry.

Affiliates are able to participate in an Industry Studies listserv, once they have attained Affiliate status. In addition to serving as a forum for ideas and discussion, the listserv helps to provide notification of workshops and other research opportunities, meetings, and special events that may be organized by any of the Sloan Industry Centers. If you would like to become an affiliate of SBIC or another Sloan Industry Center, click here for a program description and information about the nomination process.
